Matthew 22:37-39

Matthew 22:37-39

Jesus declared, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Picture Jesus, surrounded by both hungry listeners and skeptical opponents, answering a question about what really matters most in God’s law. He doesn’t hesitate or debate—He goes straight to the point by quoting the familiar and deeply loved words from Scripture: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37Deuteronomy 6:5). It is as if Jesus takes every anxious question and every complicated rule and gathers them into one strong beam of light, illuminating the one thing that matters most.

But this love for God isn’t just a fleeting feeling or pious talk—it calls for all that we are: our desires, thoughts, and choices. We are meant to love Him sincerely, without pretending, above everything or anyone else (Matthew 22:38). While we might look back at the Garden of Eden and see how mankind once could love God this way, now, in our brokenness, we need God’s Spirit to even begin loving Him as we should (Romans 8:7). Yet, here’s the comfort: when God’s love fills our hearts, we cannot help but love Him in return—because He loved us first (1 John 4:19). It is the warmth of His everlasting care that awakens real love in us.

Jesus then adds the second commandment, so close to the first that they can hardly be pulled apart: “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39Leviticus 19:18). Love for others isn’t a cold duty or something reserved only for those we like or who believe what we do. We are to show practical care, honest kindness, and deep concern for our neighbors’ well-being—spiritually, physically, and emotionally—as much as we tend to our own needs.

So as you walk through each day, remember: all of God’s good instructions flow from these two commands. When you struggle, look to Christ, who both loved perfectly and gives grace to help you love. No tangled list of rules—just a heart alive to God, flowing out in love for every person He brings across your path.
