But his delight is in the Law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night.

There’s a distinct happiness that belongs to the person who finds true delight in the law of the Lord (Psalm 1:2). While some view God’s Word as a set of heavy demands or distant rules, the one who walks with God discovers in it a treasure—words that lead to life, wisdom, and assurance. This delight isn’t found in the fading impressions of human conscience, nor in the stern voice of the law left to itself, but in the Scriptures received as God’s living voice.

David, and those who shared his heart, loved the portions of Scripture available to them—not simply the rules, but the gracious promises and the glimpses of a coming Savior woven all throughout (Psalm 119:24, Luke 24:44). For them, and for us, the law of the Lord means so much more than commands; it is God’s teaching, the “doctrine of the Lord,” where we find not only what God asks, but the hope He gives. When seen through the lens of Christ—who fulfilled the law, bore its curse, and writes it on believing hearts—God’s Word becomes a source of true joy and security (Romans 3:27).

This delight naturally overflows into meditation—a thoughtful, steady turning over of God’s words in the mind “day and night” (Joshua 1:8). Whether the sun shines brightly in prosperity or shadows lengthen in adversity, God’s Word is always worth considering. The wise believer searches its truths in quiet moments and busy ones alike, drawing comfort, guidance, and renewed strength.

Take heart in this: to love and meditate on God’s Word is no drudgery, but a gift God offers to every believer. The more we engage with His truth—in any season—the more our hearts are anchored and enlivened by grace.
