John 8:31
So He said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples.
Jesus spoke directly and kindly to those who had come to believe in Him, knowing their hearts and understanding their faith even as it first took root (John 8:31). He told them, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples.” Holding fast to the message of the Gospel—clinging to His teaching and remaining faithful through all seasons—shows that faith is genuine and not just a passing feeling.
To continue in Christ’s word means more than just hearing it once. It’s embracing the truth deep in your heart, letting it shape your choices, and refusing to abandon it when temptations or troubles come (Colossians 1:23). There will always be voices—whether from the world, the enemy, or even our own doubts—that tempt us to turn away or let go. But true followers of Jesus stay anchored in what He’s said, even when following Him is costly or countercultural.
Some claim to be disciples, but only those who persevere in faith through all circumstances are disciples in the truest sense. This steadfastness isn’t a sign of our own strength, but of God’s word taking hold in our hearts and giving us perseverance (Hebrews 3:14). As we hold on to Jesus, He holds on to us.
Be encouraged: if you find yourself clinging to Christ and His word, even when it is hard, it is a good sign that you truly belong to Him (Philippians 1:6). He invites you to remain close, for He is faithful to those who continue in His truth to the very end.
