2 Corinthians 9:6-7
Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not out of regret or compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver.
Picture a farmer carefully working in his fields, knowing that the harvest he brings in will match the way he’s gone out to sow the seed. This, Paul says, is the way we should think about generosity in life: what we give is like seed scattered on the soil—it might seem gone for a time, but God promises a return that lines up with our open-handedness (2 Corinthians 9:6). We are reminded here of an old wisdom: if you sow only a little, don’t expect an abundant harvest; but if you generously share, then generous blessings will follow.

Throughout the Scriptures, giving to others is often called “sowing” (Hosea 10:12), while “waters” and “fields” stand for the opportunities God gives us (Isaiah 55:1). Just as a sower doesn’t clutch his seed out of fear but trusts God for the coming harvest, so believers are called to give freely to those in need. To outsiders, it can look like a loss. But as every sower knows, losing seed to the soil is, in faith, the very path to gain (Ecclesiastes 11:6; Proverbs 3:9).
Paul insists that the heart behind the gift matters just as much as the gift itself (2 Corinthians 9:7). Giving shouldn’t feel forced or reluctant, nor should it leave us grumbling or regretful. Whether large or small, what we give should flow from a glad and thoughtful heart—no one is twisting your arm. The Lord delights in those who give cheerfully, who find joy in sharing what God has first given to them (Proverbs 22:8).
Maybe you worry about how much you can spare, or whether what you give makes any difference. Remember: every act of kindness, no matter the size, becomes seed for God to water in ways we can’t predict. Trust the Lord of the harvest—He sees, He cares, and He loves the cheerful giver. His blessings—sometimes seen, sometimes hidden—will come back in ways that deepen your joy and benefit others.
