Titus 3:5
He saved us, not by the righteous deeds we had done, but according to His mercy, through the washing of new birth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
When we reflect on salvation, it’s easy to drift into thinking our best efforts or past good deeds might play even a small part in earning God’s acceptance. But Scripture is clear: we are not saved by any “works of righteousness which we have done” (Titus 3:5). Even the most faithful acts—done with sincere motives and a desire to please God—do not move the scale in our favor. Before we met Christ, our best works fell short; and even after being renewed, our service is not the reason for our rescue (Ephesians 2:8-9). God’s grace, not our performance, is the foundation and guarantee of our relationship with Him.

Salvation arrives by the mercy of God—freely given, deeply compassionate, and entirely His doing (Luke 1:78). His mercy isn’t like human charity which ebbs and flows, but constant and overflowing, shown most clearly in sending Jesus to redeem us. The forgiveness of our sins, the gift of a new heart, and the hope of everlasting life all spring from this boundless mercy. It is God’s tender initiative, not our resolve, that draws us out of darkness and into His light (Psalm 51:1-2).
This change—what the Bible calls “the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit”—is not simply a ceremonial washing or an outward ritual like baptism (John 3:5; 1 Peter 3:21). Instead, it’s the Spirit’s work, cleansing the heart, reshaping our desires, and making us into new people. This inward renewal is how God marks us as His own, bringing the first hints of His eternal kingdom into our present lives (2 Corinthians 5:17; Romans 12:2). Every child of God enters this new life by grace alone, and this is our hope: God’s mercy makes us new, keeps us growing, and will finally lead us home.
