Psalm 121:1-2

Psalm 121:1-2

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.

When you read, “I will lift up my eyes to the hills,” it paints the image of someone looking upward, searching for hope and help (Psalm 121:1). This isn’t a call to trust in the high places themselves—the ancient hills of Judah—or to count on earthly helpers found there. Instead, it hints at a deeper longing, perhaps remembering that God’s presence once was symbolized on the hills of Zion and Moriah, where His ark and worship dwelled (Psalm 3:2). More than that, it reflects the instinct to lift our gaze beyond these familiar heights, all the way to God Himself, whose throne is higher than any hill—“the Most High, over all the earth” (Job 11:15).

Sometimes, people are tempted to look for rescue in all the wrong places—whether in impressive leaders, strong nations, or in manmade solutions (Jeremiah 3:23; Psalm 46:2). The psalmist gently turns from this idea and asks, “Where does my help really come from?” The answer is clear and comforting: “My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:2). If God made everything—heavens above and earth beneath—then surely there is no trouble or burden He cannot handle.

It’s easy, especially when problems feel bigger than we are, to put too much trust in human strength, clever plans, or worldly supports (Psalm 118:9). But this song reminds us that God’s help is different. He gives grace for all kinds of burdens: whether we’re struggling with sorrow, facing temptation, or simply in need of daily strength (John 11:41; Ezra 9:6). His help comes at just the right time and is exactly what we need, sometimes through ordinary means, sometimes in ways we never expected (Hebrews 4:16).

Wherever you’re placed along life’s journey—at the foot of a mountain or in a hard valley—let your heart be encouraged. The Lord who made the heavens and the earth walks beside you. Lift your eyes with confidence, and rest in knowing that your helper is both faithful and able.
