Matthew 5:17
Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them.
Imagine the rumors and disputes swirling as Jesus stood to teach—a crowd wondering if this gentle yet authority-filled Rabbi had come to dismiss everything they’d cherished: the Law, the words of Moses, the promises given by the prophets. Jesus meets their questions head-on: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them” (Matthew 5:17).
He isn’t tearing down the foundation but is, in fact, fulfilling each deep purpose and promise. The ancient commands and prophecies Jesus refers to weren’t set aside or made useless at His coming. Rather, He reveals their true intent, lives them out in perfect obedience, and shows how the whole spiritual story points to Himself (Romans 3:31). From the most basic moral command, to every prophetic hope, Jesus makes clear: He is the living completion, not the destroyer, of God’s Word.
The prophets pointed forward to a Messiah who would bring grace and blessing, and every promise and shadow finds its reality in Christ. What the Law required, Jesus taught, explained, and kept without stumbling, so that we who trust Him stand in a new relationship with God—one not built on rule-keeping, but on a righteousness secured and finished in Jesus (Romans 10:4).
So, let your heart be reassured—Jesus hasn’t removed God’s standard, but has drawn near to fulfill it for us, inviting us into both the beauty and freedom of His gospel. He is the faithful finisher of everything God has spoken and promised—trust Him, rest in Him, and walk in the fullness He gives.
