1 Peter 2:24
He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. “By His stripes you are healed.”
Picture the old rituals of Israel’s high priest: carrying the people’s sins into the sanctuary each year, or laying them upon the scapegoat and sending it into the wilderness—symbols full of weight and mystery (Leviticus 16:21). Yet what these ceremonies hinted at, Jesus accomplished completely. The apostle wants us to see that Christ Himself—perfect, spotless, and loving righteousness—took up not merely the burden of a few, but the sins of all His people, the entire, ugly heap of human disobedience and shame (Isaiah 53:6; 1 Peter 2:24). Though it was wholly foreign to His nature, Jesus stepped in as our substitute, allowing our guilt to be reckoned as His own.
This burden was laid on Christ not in theory but in reality—carried in His own body as He was lifted up on the wooden cross (Hebrews 10:10; John 19:17). No one else could carry it. Not angels, not even the dearest saint—only the Son, willingly forsaken and alone, bore our judgment to the end. His endurance under that crushing load did not break Him; instead, it broke the curse itself. Our debt is paid, not simply moved to another ledger, but entirely carried away and erased from before God—our guilt removed as far as east is from west (Psalm 103:12).
What comes of such a sacrifice? The result is a new spiritual reality: those who trust Christ are dead to sin’s claim over them. Its power to accuse and destroy is spent; we are now free to live for what is right, whole, and true (Romans 6:11). More than that, His wounds bring healing—a mysterious exchange where our brokenness meets His wholeness. Sin—the deepest and most incurable disease—finds its cure not in our efforts but in His stripes (Isaiah 53:5).
So, let this bring peace to your heart. No matter how deep the stains of yesterday may feel, the Physician’s hand is firm and gentle. You are ransomed, forgiven, and called to live each day in the fresh freedom He has secured.
