Romans 5:12

Romans 5:12

Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, so also death was passed on to all men, because all sinned.

The apostle draws us back to our origins to explain why our world is marked by brokenness, guilt, and the desperate need for rescue. Through one man—Adam—sin made its entrance into human experience, leaving a lasting shadow over every person born into this world (Romans 5:12). Adam’s first act of disobedience wasn’t just a private mistake—it opened the door to corruption, both in human nature and in all creation. Sin here is described as a sort of contagion: it did not stay contained, but spread to and through all Adam’s descendants.

When sin came, death followed right behind it—a death that is not only physical, but also spiritual. This death means separation from God, the source of true life, bringing both broken relationships and eventual bodily decay (Genesis 2:17Romans 6:23). Although none of us were present in Eden, we all share in Adam’s fall—not by imitation alone, but because he acted as our representative. His failure, in a mysterious but real way, counted as our own; as Scripture says, “in Adam all die” (1 Corinthians 15:22).

Yet in understanding the depth of our need, we also glimpse the vastness of God’s love. God did not abandon humanity to judgment, but sent Christ as the new “last Adam,” so those joined to Him receive grace instead of condemnation, and life instead of death (Romans 5:17). Just as Adam’s act affected everyone, Christ’s obedience opens the door to new life for all who receive Him by faith.

If you ever feel discouraged by the weight of our inherited weakness, remember this: the story does not end with sin and death. In Christ, God has provided a greater salvation than the ruin we’ve inherited. Our hope is not in self-reform, but in the new life offered freely by the grace of Jesus—grace that undoes what Adam’s sin began.
