Romans 5:1

Romans 5:1

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

This passage opens a door into one of the most comforting truths in Scripture: that we are declared righteous before God simply by faith, not by anything we do or have ever done (Romans 5:1). It’s important to recognize what this does—and does not—mean. Faith doesn’t create our forgiveness or earn our standing with God; rather, it is the way we receive what Christ has already accomplished. Our justification, the very moment God declares us righteous, flows not from our faith itself, but entirely from Christ’s finished work and the free grace of God (Romans 4:25). Faith is not the cause or the reason for our justification; instead, it is the humble, open hand by which we accept Christ’s righteousness as our own.

It is easy—even natural—to slip into the idea that faith, as our own activity or virtue, is what makes us right with God. If that were true, justification would depend on something within us, and we might begin to take some of the credit. But the peace we receive with God rests not on our faith’s strength, but on the sufficiency of Christ. We trust what He has done, and through faith, we come to recognize and enjoy that right relationship with God (Ephesians 2:8-9). Justification, from beginning to end, is the result of Christ’s righteousness, graciously counted as ours, and made real to our hearts in believing.

The beautiful result is peace with God—a deep reconciliation with the very One against whom we have sinned (Philippians 4:7). This peace is not merely a feeling or a lack of trouble with others; it is the steady assurance, planted deep by the Spirit, that all is truly well between us and our Maker because of Jesus. It is a peace that often surpasses our understanding but stands as a testimony to the perfect work of Christ. When doubts or failures crowd in, remember that this peace is a gift, not a reward—a quiet strength found in looking to Jesus, our righteousness.
