Mark 11:22-23

Mark 11:22-23

“Have faith in God,” Jesus said to them. “Truly I tell you that if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and has no doubt in his heart but believes that it will happen, it will be done for him.

In the previous verse, Peter has just said to Jesus, “Look, Rabbi! The fig tree You cursed has withered.” Now picture the disciples, gathered in surprise and awe, staring at the fig tree that was withered just at Jesus’ word. Their amazement spills out in questions—how could this happen so quickly? Jesus, always the gentle teacher, turns their attention not just to the miracle itself, but to its heartbeat: faith (Mark 11:21-22). “Have faith in God,” He says—not a vague optimism, but a living trust in the Almighty, the kind of faith that springs up because God Himself gives it, and that’s firmly anchored in His power and goodness (Ephesians 2:8).

It’s tempting to read these verses and think they’re only about supernatural signs. But Jesus is pointing to something even deeper. He widens their vision: “Whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and doesn’t doubt but truly believes—it will be done” (Mark 11:23). The mountain here is more than geography; it’s any obstacle, any trouble, any challenge that seems immovable in our lives.

Real, God-given faith doesn’t mean we twist God’s arm to do whatever we want. Instead, it anchors itself in who God is—sovereign, wise, perfectly faithful. Faith takes Jesus at His word, which means trusting Him not just for the miraculous but for daily encouragement, provision, and strength (Philippians 4:13).

If your prayers feel small or your trust wobbles at the sight of life’s “mountains,” remember this scene. Jesus’ command is not to muster up willpower, but to lean on the God who moves mountains. Bring Him your doubts and your needs. He welcomes even mustard-seed faith and turns it into something fruitful (Matthew 17:20). His faithfulness gives us confidence to pray boldly and wait expectantly—believing that in His time and way, the impossible can give way to grace.
