Hebrews 13:5

Hebrews 13:5

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, for God has said: “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.”

When God calls us to let our conversations and lives be free from the grip of covetousness, He is inviting us to a freedom that many never experience in this world of constant want and restless ambition (Hebrews 13:5). Coveting—an unrestrained desire for more—is never satisfied. It leads us away from faith and into a subtle idolatry, as we begin looking to possessions, security, or status as the source of our contentment, when only God can truly fill that space in our hearts (Colossians 3:5). If we keep our standard of happiness tied to material gain, we will always find reasons for frustration and discontent. Such an attitude can crowd out both generosity and love; it distracts us from caring for our families, working with integrity, and extending hospitality to those in need (1 Timothy 6:10).

Instead, we are called to be content with what God has given us in this moment, whether that is much or little, joy or hardship (Philippians 4:11-12). True contentment comes not from pretending our troubles don’t exist, but from a thankful spirit—choosing gratitude for every blessing, big or small, and surrendering our plans to the wise and loving will of our Father (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Life is short, and none of us brought anything into the world, nor can we take anything out (Job 1:21). Resting in God’s care, we can trust that what He provides is always enough, because He Himself promises never to leave us empty or forsaken (Joshua 1:5).

Believers are not left to fend for themselves. God pledges in all seasons—whether in abundance or need—to stand beside His children, never abandoning them to their own weakness or to the difficulties of this life. Even if His face seems hidden for a time, His presence is sure, and He will ultimately complete the good work He began in us (Psalm 37:25). With a heart anchored in His promise, we’re freed to give, serve, and love without fear of lack.
