Hebrews 12:2
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Picture a traveler on a long and winding road—through fog and storms, he charts his course by fixing his eyes on a distant, dependable light. In the life of faith, Jesus Himself is that unfailing beacon. We’re called not to look for Him with these earthly eyes, but with the eyes of faith—a kind of inner vision that sees beyond the surface. This faith may start as a faint glimmer, but as we keep turning our attention back to Jesus, it grows clearer, humbles our hearts, and quietly changes us into people who reflect His love and joy (Hebrews 12:2, 1 Peter 1:8). No matter how many distractions or burdens crowd our path, we’re called to look past them and fix our thoughts on Christ.
He is Jesus—the only Saviour, God’s chosen Redeemer. All salvation, hope, and help come through Him alone. To look to anyone or anything else for what only Christ can give is to be left empty. Faith itself begins with Him and is brought to completion by Him; we can’t muster it up by our own willpower. It is Christ, by His Spirit, who sparks faith in our hearts, who nourishes it, prays for its endurance, and brings it safely to its glorious end—eternal life (Ephesians 2:8–9, Luke 17:5).
Jesus endured the cross—the agony, the humiliation, the rejection—because something precious was set before Him: the joy of bringing His people home, seeing God’s goodness displayed, and purchasing our salvation. He didn’t cling to the comforts of heaven but chose our rescue, walking into pain and shame for all of us, both Jew and Gentile alike (Philippians 2:6–8, Psalms 22:16).
Now, the One who suffered sits in triumph at God’s right hand, honored above every name. For us, this means our hope is secure. Even if we face ridicule or hardship for trusting Christ, we can take courage—He counted it worth despising the world’s shame for the joy set before Him. So let’s lift our eyes above the noise, knowing our Savior has gone before us, and one day we too will rest and rejoice with Him in glory (Romans 8:17, Revelation 3:21).
