Romans 12:21
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Life frequently challenges us with moments when evil seems to have the upper hand. Whether the source is the quiet whisper of temptation, the sting of another person’s wrongdoing, or the old resentments that linger in our hearts, there is a persistent pressure to respond in kind—to hit back, to defend our pride, or to brood over hurts (Ephesians 6:11). But Scripture invites us to a far different path: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21).

It’s easy to forget that behind every personal conflict, there is a deeper struggle at work. The enemy, Satan, seeks to fan the flames of anger and push us toward revenge, hoping that we’ll give in to our lower natures (James 4:7). But the call to “put on the whole armor of God” means we guard ourselves—not with sharp words or grudges, but with truth, faith, and prayer. If we resist the urge to retaliate, if we refuse to repay injury with injury, then evil doesn’t win; we gain a freedom the world cannot take away (2 Peter 2:19).
When we answer hatred with kindness—feeding the hungry, offering help to someone who has hurt us, or choosing words that heal instead of wound—we are not just avoiding the cycle of revenge. Rather, we are overcoming evil by drawing on the strength and love Christ Himself has shown us (Romans 8:37). Sometimes kindness softens those who oppose us; sometimes it changes us, making us more like Christ. Either way, choosing good is not weakness, but victory—a mark of being “more than conquerors” because He is with us.
So, take courage. You are not left alone to fight bitterness and pain by your own strength. God gives the grace, the wisdom, and the power to rise above it—overcoming evil, not by force, but by reflecting the goodness of the One who has already overcome for us.
