Proverbs 22:6

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

The wisdom found in Proverbs urges us to “Train up a child in the way he should go” (Proverbs 22:6), offering parents and caregivers a gentle but powerful calling. It’s not just about lessons or discipline; it’s about patiently guiding young hearts toward what is right, much like Abraham cared for those in his household, leading them in God’s ways and teaching them justice and righteousness (Genesis 14:14).

Training children isn’t reserved for ancient times or only for families like Abraham’s. It is meant for today, for every Christian home. We are charged to raise the children God entrusts to us “in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4). This means praying together, reading God’s Word, teaching them right from wrong in little moments every day, and—perhaps most vitally—showing them what a Christlike life looks like in the ordinary ups and downs. Like feeding a child, we give truth in gentle, steady measures, suited to what each can understand, starting from even their earliest days.

There’s a sweet comfort here: when children are filled with godly teaching and loving example, those early lessons settle deep, shaping their hearts and habits. While not every child may follow that path without wandering—there are, of course, exceptions—the wise pattern is that what is planted young tends to endure. Even when life brings questions or detours, the foundation of truth and grace can draw them home again, helping them put their faith into practice as they grow strong in wisdom.

Take heart, then, whether you’re a parent, grandparent, teacher, or mentor. The patient seeds you sow—prayer, example, loving discipline—are not wasted. In God’s timing and kindness, they may bear fruit that lasts for a lifetime and even beyond.
