John 1:9
The true Light who gives light to every man was coming into the world.
Picture for a moment the world just before dawn—shadowy, hushed, and waiting for light. Into this expectant darkness comes Christ, described here as the true light, not one borrowed or dim, but the very source of all genuine illumination (John 1:9). He’s not merely another reflection or symbol; He is the radiant center from which all light—physical, intellectual, spiritual—flows. It was Christ who first commanded light to shine out of darkness at creation itself (Genesis 1:3), and it is He who brings understanding to human hearts, both to angels above and all who trust Him below (Colossians 1:16-17).
Throughout the history of God’s people, various lights stood as reminders—the glowing pillar of fire in the wilderness (Exodus 13:21), the shining lamps in the tabernacle (Exodus 25:37)—but these served as previews of the real and lasting light that Christ alone provides. While some have insisted that wisdom is found in law, tradition, or self-appointed guides, none of these “lights” can truly pierce the world’s darkness or satisfy the soul’s longing (Psalm 119:105). Christ outshines them all, revealing what’s true and lasting and showing us the way to the Father (John 14:6).
When Scripture says that Christ “gives light to everyone,” it reminds us that every spark of moral conscience, reason, and longing for truth in human hearts is a gracious gift from Him, the Creator of all (John 1:9). Some mistake this for an inner light that leads all by itself, but apart from Christ’s true light, even the best of human wisdom falls short (Jeremiah 17:9). Yet, how generous is our Savior! Every bit of knowledge, every good impulse, every glimmer of right and wrong points back to Him—and calls us to honor and trust the One who made us.
So take heart: Christ’s light reaches every willing heart, regardless of background or story. In Him, confusion gives way to clarity, and fear melts before the warmth of God’s presence (2 Corinthians 4:6). Let His brightness guide you, comfort you, and fill your ordinary days with purpose and hope.
