Matthew 5:44
But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
When Jesus calls us to love our enemies, He is not only asking for polite words or outward gestures, but for the deeper work of seeing each person—even a hostile one—as a fellow human made in God’s image (Matthew 5:44). This teaching is not mere sentiment; it’s a summons to break the cycle of animosity that runs through our world. While it is right to reject a person’s evil actions, Christ’s way means we still treat them with tenderness and compassion (Romans 12:20). We may not be able to embrace everyone as a spiritual brother or sister, but we can—and must—show the basic respect and mercy that every human deserves.
When someone curses you or throws harsh words your way, don’t return fire with more anger. Instead, answer them with gentle words and a calm spirit, aiming to soften hearts and—if possible—win them with kindness (Matthew 5:44). This doesn’t mean praising evil or pretending wrong is right. Rather, it means letting your response reflect your Father’s goodness, blessing those who lash out and refusing to stoop to their level (Romans 12:14).
And what about those who actively hate or harm you? Jesus says to seek their good—not just with words, but with actions. Feed them if they’re hungry, clothe them if they’re in need, and pray sincerely for their well-being, both physically and spiritually (Romans 12:20). By doing this, you’re not just following a rule—you’re shining the same mercy Christ showed from the cross, when He forgave those who were hurting Him (Luke 23:34). This isn’t easy or natural; it’s supernatural, the very heart of Christianity.
If you find this calling daunting, remember that what feels impossible for us is beautifully possible with God’s help. As you walk in this way, you become a living testimony to the grace of God—a channel of His love in a world desperately short on mercy. Let His example fill you with gentle courage today.
