What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law, but under grace? Certainly not!

When the question is raised—“Should we go on sinning since we are not under the law but under grace?”—it’s one rooted in a deep misunderstanding of the gospel (Romans 6:15). It’s as if someone imagines that because the old law’s strict penalties no longer threaten believers, God’s kindness grants a blank check to live however we want. This isn’t a new concern; even in the apostle’s day, skeptics and critics tried to twist grace into permission for careless living, thinking, “If God loves us and promises never to let us go, then what harm is there in ignoring His commands?” (Romans 3:8)

But grace does not mean the commands have disappeared. The law was once a stern schoolmaster, but now, in Christ’s hands, it becomes our trusted guide (Matthew 5:17). We’re no longer under fear of condemnation, but God’s standard of goodness hasn’t changed. Instead, a believer’s obedience now springs from gratitude and love, not dread. When God’s children fall, His correction is not a judge’s sentence but a Father’s loving discipline, meant for restoration and growth—not for rejection (Hebrews 12:6, Psalm 89:32-33).

To twist the doctrine of grace into an excuse for sin reveals that its true power hasn’t reached the heart. Grace, after all, isn’t a shelter from moral change, but the very fuel that stirs up new desires for holiness and self-control (Titus 2:11-12). Paul’s answer is strong and clear: absolutely not! Sin has no rightful place in a life touched by such lavish mercy (Romans 6:15).

Let your soul be steady with this comfort: God’s unwavering love is not an excuse to wander, but a gentle strength pulling you always back to goodness. When you feel the tug-of-war between old habits and new grace, remember—His mercy is not permission to drift, but the sure hand guiding you safely home.
