Matthew 10:39

Matthew 10:39

Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.

Jesus’ words here cut against the grain of what most people instinctively believe about life and security. He knows how easy it is for us to cling tightly to comfort, reputation, and the approval of those around us—thinking these are the treasures that will keep us safe and happy (Matthew 10:39). Yet, He kindly warns that if our main focus is to protect our earthly lives—even if it means keeping quiet about our faith or blending in with the crowd—we may find we’ve traded away something far more precious.

Choosing short-term gain at the expense of faithfulness can feel like “winning” in the moment. Maybe it’s escaping embarrassment, discomfort, or even danger. But Jesus makes it plain that what seems like saving your life now, if it comes through denying Him, ultimately leads to a profound and lasting loss—a life that slips through our fingers in the world to come (Mark 8:35Luke 9:24).

But here’s the heartening truth: when we’re willing to let go of lesser things for the sake of Christ—be it status, ease, or even our very lives—we find a richer and more lasting reward waiting for us on the other side (Matthew 16:25). God doesn’t overlook even hidden sacrifices. To lose this life for His sake is, in the end, to discover true life: first in the presence of God as soon as this life ends, and one day, in a resurrected body, sharing in unending joy with Jesus Himself (John 12:25-26).

So take heart when the path of faithfulness feels costly or lonely. Christ promises that no act of courage or loyalty to Him is wasted. What the world calls loss, He calls gain—a life kept safe and whole forever in God’s care.
