Matthew 6:24

Matthew 6:24

No one can serve two masters: Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

Jesus’ words about serving two masters gather us into a familiar household scene: picture a servant living in two homes at once, with two different heads of house, both asking very different things. The arrangement doesn’t last long; one master’s wishes will always clash with the other’s, and the servant can’t obey both without running into trouble or betraying someone along the way (Matthew 6:24Luke 16:13). This old saying, well known to Jesus’ listeners, rings true in every age: no one can steer two ships at the same time when they’re set on diverging courses.

Jesus brings the lesson into sharp focus: just as it’s impossible to serve two masters, it’s folly to think we can give our hearts wholly to both God and mammon—that is, to wealth, possessions, and all the trappings of material success (Matthew 6:24). The word “mammon” reminds us of more than coins or bank ledgers—it’s about whatever holds our trust, love, and confidence. When money takes God’s place as our comfort or security, it becomes more than just a tool; it takes on the shape of an idol (Colossians 3:5). The struggle is not a new one. In Jesus’ day, many wore the clothing of piety but inwardly pursued their own gain, losing sight of what mattered most (Matthew 23:25).

Let’s not make the mistake of thinking God grudgingly withholds good from us. Instead, He knows our hearts can only rest in One place; divided loyalty always leaves us weary, anxious, and dissatisfied (James 4:8). True freedom comes when we let Him rule alone, trusting that everything else will find its proper place under His care (Matthew 6:33). If you feel pulled in too many directions or worried about what you need, turn afresh to the Lord—He will not fail those who love Him first.
