The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

It’s a striking moment when John looks up and sees Jesus approaching—no longer coming for baptism, but returning from the wilderness, having faced temptation and triumphed (Matthew 4:1–11). Christ’s timing is perfect; He arrives just as people’s hearts are stirred by John’s bold testimony to the priests and Levites the previous day (John 1:19–29). In this scene, God prepares the way for His Son to be clearly revealed, much as He promised long ago to send Elijah to announce the Messiah’s arrival “before the great and dreadful day of the Lord” (Malachi 4:5).

When John calls out, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29), he uses language every Jew would understand. The lamb meant innocence, gentleness, sacrifice—echoes of centuries of daily offerings by which God’s people sought forgiveness (Exodus 29:38–42). But Christ is more than just another sacrifice—He is the true Lamb: spotless, harmless, and wholly pleasing to God, provided and chosen by the Father Himself (1 Peter 1:18–19, Ephesians 5:2).

The heart of John’s message is both wide and deep. Jesus carries away not just one nation’s failings or a single person’s guilt, but the weight of sin that stretches from the dawn of creation to the very end—original sin, daily failings, shame, regrets, for all who trust in Him (Hebrews 9:26, 1 John 1:7). While not every person will turn to Him, all who do—Jew or Gentile—find forgiveness and new life (John 3:16, John 6:33).

Rest in this daily, ongoing mercy. Christ’s sacrifice is never out of date or insufficient. Just as lambs were offered every morning and evening, the power of Jesus’ blood is continually available for our cleansing, no matter how many times we fall (Hebrews 7:25). Look to Him with faith and gratitude; the invitation to behold the Lamb is as open and comforting now as it was on the banks of the Jordan. He has truly taken away sin—yours included.
