1 John 1:6-7
If we say we have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
John gives us a searching test for genuine fellowship with God: “If we say we have fellowship with Him, yet walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth” (1 John 1:6). It’s not enough to make bold claims about our relationship with God or to profess the right beliefs. If our daily lives, choices, and attitudes remain in the shadows of sin and rebellion—when we continue in paths of unbelief, ignorance, or self-will—we show that something is out of step. True fellowship with God means stepping out of darkness and into His light.
To “walk in the light” means letting God’s truth expose and guide every part of us (1 John 1:7). Like children growing up in a bright room, we become increasingly aware of our need for grace and come to know Christ more fully. When we choose light over darkness, we demonstrate that our hearts are in harmony with God. This isn’t about perfection but direction—staying honest before Him and not hiding in old ways of darkness (John 3:21).
And here’s the comfort: when we live in that light, we discover real fellowship—not just with God, but also with His Son, Jesus. Day after day, the blood of Jesus, God’s own Son, cleanses us from all sin—every fault, failing, secret, or shame (Hebrews 9:14; Acts 20:28). His sacrifice is enough for every moment we stumble, and His cleansing is ongoing—covering us with confidence and peace as we walk with Him.
Take heart: walking in the light is not about flawless living, but about relying on Christ’s sufficiency. His grace truly reaches every shadow, and His blood truly cleanses every sin for those who keep coming into the light.
