1-John-3-18

1 John 3:18

Little children, let us love not in word and speech, but in action and truth.

When John calls us “little children” here, he gently reminds us how God sees us—as beloved, in need of guidance, learning still what love really means (1 John 3:18). His words are simple, yet searching: our love for others should not be just talk or warm words (1 John 3:18). It’s easy to offer a cheery greeting, or promise prayers for someone, and then move on, unchanged. Kind words matter, especially when everyone around us could use a little more gentleness. Yet, loving only with our lips, without real intent or action behind those words, falls short of Christ’s example (James 2:15-16).

The faithfulness of Christian love is found not in what we say so much as what we do (1 John 3:18). True love rolls up its sleeves. This kind of love shows itself in bearing one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2), practicing patience and forgiveness, praying sincerely, and gently correcting with humility when a brother or sister wanders (Jude 1:20-23). Meeting physical needs—sharing resources, showing hospitality, providing for someone’s daily concerns—is just as vital (Romans 12:13). To love “in deed and in truth” is to let our actions ring true, springing from the heart, sincere and cheerful, never begrudging or done for show (2 Corinthians 9:7).

There will always be a temptation to settle for good intentions or friendly appearances, but the Scriptures urge us higher—toward real, costly, committed care for one another (Hebrews 6:10). This is the labor of love, the proof that God’s Spirit is at work in us. When our love moves from words to deeds, believers become a living testimony to Christ’s love in a world hungry for authenticity and hope (John 13:35).

So, if you wonder how best to love today, remember: a helping hand, a shared meal, a quiet prayer, or even a timely word can speak more deeply than a thousand promises. Let your kindness be more than polite speech—may it be the honest overflow of a Christ-changed heart (1 John 3:18).
