1-John-3-13

1 John 3:13

So do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you.

It can feel surprising and even unsettling when those around us react with hostility simply because we follow Christ. Yet Scripture reassures us not to be shocked by this reaction: “Don’t be surprised, brothers and sisters, if the world hates you” (1 John 3:13). Here, “the world” speaks of people who remain untouched by God’s transforming grace—those who look with suspicion or distaste upon lives that no longer blend in with their own. The cause of this resentment is not rooted in any true harm believers have done, but flows from the undeniable difference God’s calling creates; those set apart by Christ no longer join in the world’s ways (John 15:19).

This pattern didn’t start with us; it runs all the way back to humanity’s earliest days. Right after the fall, a deep divide appeared between those who belong to God and those who do not (Genesis 3:15). Consider how Cain turned against his brother Abel—not for any injustice, but simply because Abel’s life reflected righteousness (Genesis 4:8). Again, the story of Ishmael and Isaac reminds us that those shaped by God’s promise will often face pushback from those who live only by the flesh (Galatians 4:29). This thread weaves itself through every age: the prophets were abused by their own people; Christ Himself was scorned and rejected (Matthew 23:37; John 15:18).

If then, you find yourself enduring scorn or hardship simply because you live for Jesus, take heart and do not count it as strange. You are walking the well-trodden path of all who have chosen godliness, a way both ancient and honored in God’s sight (2 Timothy 3:12). God has always kept His people—even when they felt alone or misunderstood. Let this reminder steady and comfort you as you continue to shine light in a world that sometimes prefers darkness.
