For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Paul reminds us here that the kingdom of God is not ultimately about outward matters—what we eat or drink, the routines, rules, or preferences that so easily become the focus of our religious life (Romans 14:17). In God’s eyes, the true essence of His kingdom and the heart of real spiritual living isn’t to be found in food or rituals, but in something far deeper and richer. Avoiding or observing certain practices can neither open heaven’s door nor earn a person favor with God (1 Corinthians 8:8; Hebrews 9:10).

What does God’s kingdom look like among us? It’s marked by “righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.” This righteousness is not something we achieve on our own—it’s the standing Jesus gives to those who trust in Him, a righteousness received by faith and sealed by His blood. Peace, too, flows from what Christ has done: peace with God, peace within our hearts, and peace with one another as believers learn to forgive and bear with each other’s weaknesses. Joy follows; it’s a work of the Holy Spirit, lifting us above our circumstances into cheerful confidence because we belong to Christ.

These fruits—righteousness, peace, and joy—are the real evidence that God is at work and His kingdom is being built in and among us. When we focus on these gifts of grace, it shifts the way we treat each other, especially in areas of difference and disagreement over things that simply don’t reach the core of our faith.

So, if you find yourself distracted by the details, frustrated by differences, or fearing you don’t measure up, remember: what delights God is not the outward show but the new life He produces inside those who trust Him. Set your heart on what matters most, and rest in the Spirit’s work to fill your life with what you could never earn—His righteousness, His peace, and His joy.
