1 John 5:11-13
And this is that testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.
Here, the apostle sets out the heart of the Christian message—a truth that stands as God’s own testimony: eternal life is God’s free and gracious gift, given to us in His Son (1 John 5:11). This eternal life goes far beyond what we see now; it promises joy, freedom from sorrow, and perfect fellowship with God, lasting forever. The security of this life isn’t found in our efforts or achievements, but in Christ alone. Before the world began, God purposed to give this gift to those joined to His Son by faith—a pledge He brings to fulfillment as we come to trust in Jesus (Ephesians 1:4-5).
The apostle draws a sharp but loving line: “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life” (1 John 5:12). It’s not about having just a passing knowledge or vague admiration, but real, personal faith—trusting Christ, loving Him, and having Him dwell in our hearts. Where Jesus is present, there spiritual life flourishes both now and forever; where He is absent, there is only spiritual deadness, no matter how noble or religious life may appear on the surface (John 3:36).
These words were written to steady and strengthen believers. They are meant to give you confidence in what God has promised—to remind you that if you believe in Christ, you have eternal life right now, not just as a future hope, but as a living reality in your heart (1 John 5:13). This assurance doesn’t make us careless; it encourages us to keep trusting and growing, knowing our salvation is secure, grounded in God’s unchanging grace.
So as you meditate on these promises, let them nurture your faith. God wants you to know—not wish or wonder—that life eternal is yours in Jesus. Let His words be an anchor when doubts creep in, and a reason to rejoice, grow, and walk on with courage each day.
