Luke 9:23
Then Jesus said to all of them, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.
Jesus didn’t just speak these words to His closest followers, but He invited a whole crowd to listen in (Mark 8:34). When He said, “If anyone wants to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me,” the invitation was wide open—no one was left out (Luke 9:23). This was not just for the deeply religious or spiritually advanced; Jesus spoke it so everyone, no matter their background, could hear and respond.
Notice the weight placed on “daily.” This little word, tucked into the sentence, brings the lesson into the rhythms of our everyday lives. Following Jesus isn’t reserved for big moments or special occasions; it calls for a pattern of self-denial and trust, worked out one ordinary day at a time (Luke 9:23). Like carrying a cross through city streets, taking up our cross isn’t comfortable or glamorous—it calls us to lay down our pride, preferences, and even our expectations regularly, knowing that there are real burdens and struggles along the way (Matthew 16:24).
It’s easy to imagine discipleship as a single grand gesture, but here Jesus reveals it’s more like a daily walk—a thousand small choices to trust Him despite difficulty or discomfort. Trials and afflictions are not strange surprises for God’s people; rather, Jesus prepares us for them and invites us to bear them with patience and even with joy, since He walks ahead, showing us the way (John 16:33).
So, as you journey through today, remember you’re not carrying your cross alone. Each step of faithful obedience is precious to Him, and through every high and low, Christ’s companionship and strength are reliable and sure. Nothing you carry for Him, no matter how heavy, goes unnoticed. As you follow, know that His love meets you in every sacrifice—offering comfort, hope, and the promise of life that never fades (Romans 8:18).
