Romans 8:31
What then shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Paul’s words in Romans serve as a turning point in the conversation he’s been leading. He’s held up both the reality of our hardships and the breathtaking sweep of God’s saving work. Now, he invites us to stop and ask: “What can we say in response to all this?” Are we meant to complain about our trials? Not at all, since every sorrow and setback is woven by God’s hand for our ultimate good and cannot compare to the glory waiting for us (Romans 8:18, 28). And when we think about the blessings Paul names—God’s foreknowledge, His choosing of us, our calling, our being declared righteous, and the promise of eternal glory—what more could we possibly add? These are complete, undeserved gifts, overflowing with the freedom of God’s grace (Romans 8:29–30).

We might wonder if anyone or anything can speak against such blessings—can anyone nullify them or push us away from God’s love? There is truly nothing that can overturn what God has given, neither earthly force nor hell itself (Romans 8:33–34). Even our own doubts must not drown out the confidence that comes from God’s unchanging love. If we’re searching for the heart of these words, it’s this: God’s love is unshakable, and His care for us absolutely secures our salvation from beginning to end (Romans 8:35, 39).
If God is for us, who could ever truly stand against us? God’s affection isn’t distant or abstract. It’s proven—He gave Himself, His Son, and His Spirit, He shields us from harm, strengthens us in temptations, and ensures our safe journey home, no matter the opposition (Romans 8:31). Good angels are not our enemies; they’re our helpers and protectors. The law no longer condemns us, for Christ fulfilled it on our behalf. Even justice, satisfied by Christ’s sacrifice, stands on our side. Yes, we have enemies: sin, Satan, and the world. Yet, none of their schemes can succeed in cutting us off from God or ruin our future.
So let this truth wrap around you like a warm coat: With God on your side, you have nothing to fear. His promises cannot be broken, and the love He set on you will never fail (Romans 8:38–39).
