A man’s heart plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.

In life, it’s natural for us to make our own plans and set goals for the future—after all, it’s a mark of wisdom to consider where we’re headed and how we ought to live (Proverbs 16:9). But this verse gently reminds us that while we may think carefully about our course, it is ultimately the Lord who shapes each step we take. This isn’t meant to discourage thoughtfulness or wise planning—God delights in hearts that long to walk rightly—but it reminds us that our wisdom is limited, and our understanding often falls short.

The promise here isn’t for those who plot mischief or walk in stubborn pride (Proverbs 6:14); instead, it’s for the one whose heart is inclined toward goodness—a heart softened and guided by God’s Spirit. Even though we may desire to choose the right path, our insight isn’t enough. Like Jeremiah observed, it’s not in us, by nature, to direct our own steps perfectly—we need God’s hand to lead us (Jeremiah 10:23).

God’s direction isn’t always obvious in the moment. At times, His guidance comes quietly, in subtle shifts and changes we only recognize in hindsight. But for the person who looks to Him and seeks His will, He graciously orders their steps, leading them safely even through confusion, setbacks, and detours. His aim is always to guide us toward His kingdom and the joy He’s prepared for us, keeping us steady through every trial.

So as you make plans—big or small—rest in this comforting assurance: your life is not left to chance, or to your own wisdom alone. Trusting God with both your plans and your steps, you can walk forward in confidence, knowing the Lord goes before you and establishes your path.
