Romans 1:18
The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness.
As the apostle lays the foundation for his teaching on how we are made right with God—not by our own efforts, but by faith in Jesus—he pauses to tell us why good deeds alone can never save us. Both Jews and Gentiles, whether guided by the law of Moses or the law written on their hearts, fall short of God’s perfect standard (Romans 3:23). The “wrath of God” speaks of His settled, righteous anger against sin—that deep, unchanging opposition to everything evil, both in the world and within us. This is not a temper that flares up out of nowhere, but a holy, just response to rebellion against Him (Romans 1:18).
This divine wrath isn’t something humanity can ignore. It is revealed—shown openly—in the brokenness around us, whether through the natural order, the stories of judgment recorded in Scripture, or the warnings given to our conscience. From the flood that washed away a violent world (Genesis 7:23), to the fire that consumed Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19:24), to plagues and other judgments, history itself testifies that God takes sin seriously. But nowhere is that wrath clearer than when Jesus bore the judgment sinners deserved—so that those who trust Him are rescued from condemnation (Romans 5:9).
The target of this wrath is “all ungodliness and unrighteousness”—every form of rebellion against God and injustice against one another. Some try to suppress what they know is true, either hiding the knowledge of God or ignoring His standards in their daily life (Romans 1:18). It’s a sobering reminder: knowing the truth is not enough if we do not love it or live by it.
But here is the comfort—God does not leave us under threat, but graciously invites us into the shelter of Christ’s righteousness. If you ever feel the weight of guilt or think God’s anger is only bad news, remember: it is the shadow cast by a far greater light—the gift of salvation offered to everyone who believes (John 3:36). Let His grace be your refuge today.
