Psalm 121:6

Psalm 121:6

The sun will not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.

As you read the promise, “The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night” (Psalm 121:6), you may picture the ancient traveler, vulnerable to long hours beneath a scorching sky and chilly twilight winds. In those days, the burning sun could sap one’s strength, while the mysterious glow of the moon was sometimes linked—by poets and folk wisdom—to dangers of cold, fever, or even trouble of the mind. Yet this song of ascent is a gentle reassurance: whether you walk in daylight or through the uncertain night, God’s protection gently surrounds His people.

We can set aside the old superstitions that the moon’s rays actually injure the body, or that its light causes true harm—our Maker, the Author of sun and stars, governs their influence (Genesis 1:16). Still, the psalmist’s words reach beyond literal threats. At times, life’s trials blaze like the sun—public troubles, relentless pressures, antagonism that seems to come from all sides (Matthew 13:6). At other times, suffering is hidden or subtle, like the chill that creeps in unnoticed at night—quiet fears, loneliness, or the private pain only the Lord can see.

While faithful people can and do experience both harsh heat and cold reality, the deeper promise remains: whatever the season, our hardship is not random nor our wounds wasted (Genesis 31:40). At times persecution and trial—painted as sun and moon—press in, but they cannot ultimately harm what matters most (Revelation 7:16). God keeps watch, even turning adversity for our good. In the end, there comes a day—whether in moments of peace now or in the eternal city to come—when all harm and threat fade in the presence of His perfect shelter (Revelation 7:15).

So take heart. Whatever daylight trial or midnight fear you face, they are bounded by the care of your Keeper. He will not let you go.
