Deuteronomy 6:4
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is One.
Imagine Moses standing before the people, his voice carrying across the camp, calling everyone to pause and listen—“Hear, O Israel.” These are not just the opening words of a famous verse; they’re an invitation to deep attention and reverence, as if a loving parent were drawing close to share something vital and dearly held (Deuteronomy 6:4). For generations, believers have treasured these words and repeated them morning and evening, letting them anchor both the day’s hopes and fears.
“The LORD our God is one LORD”—with these words, Moses reaffirms that the God who called Israel, who parted the sea and provided in the wilderness, is unique, unmatched, and utterly singular in nature (Deuteronomy 6:4). He alone is eternal, unchanging, all-powerful, wholly good, and utterly complete in Himself—there is no room for rivals in His being or character (Isaiah 45:5). Only one is infinite, righteous, and self-sufficient: the God who made the heavens and earth in the beginning (Genesis 1:1), who rules and provides, and who invites His people to know Him personally.
Some might wonder if believing God is one leaves any room for the full richness of how God reveals Himself—as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. But while Scripture insists on God’s perfect unity, it also lets us glimpse the beautiful mystery of three Persons in one divine essence (1 John 5:7, John 10:30). This is not a contradiction but a marvel—God’s unity is not mere mathematical simplicity, but a boundless relationship of love and purpose, perfectly one.
Let these truths anchor your soul. In a world full of shifting comforts and spiritual confusion, you are invited to rest in the care of the one true and living God, who is both near and sufficient for every need. When doubts or fears rush in, remember: the Lord is One—unfailing in faithfulness, limitless in power, and perfect in love for those who call on Him.
