God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth.”
When Jesus says, “God is spirit,” He reminds us that the living God isn’t physical or limited by the boundaries of a body (John 4:24). In our world, it’s easy to picture God as a distant power or to imagine Him with human shape and features, but Scripture tells us His nature is far greater. God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—is wholly unique, unbound by time or matter, and thoroughly perfect in every way. He isn’t like the things we can touch or see; His presence fills heaven and earth, yet He remains unseen, immortal, infinitely wise, and everlasting (1 Timothy 1:17), (Psalm 90:2).
Because God is spirit, He is not put together out of parts or pieces, nor is He subject to decay or change as all created things are. Angels and human souls are spirits, but God is eternally above them—He is the Source from whom every spiritual being receives life and purpose (Hebrews 12:9). His greatness outshines any excellence we see in others, and He is free from every weakness or limitation that touches His creation.
So, when it comes to worship, Jesus teaches that true devotion isn’t about special places or outward rituals, but about a genuine, heart-level response to God’s nature. We are called to worship Him “in spirit and in truth”—not simply going through the motions with our bodies, but lifting our hearts, minds, and will to Him in sincerity, guided by what He has revealed in His Word (John 4:23), (Psalm 51:17).
Let this encourage you: no matter where you are, you can draw near to God. He gladly receives humble, honest worship from the secret place of the heart. When you seek Him with reverence and love, you are meeting the One who knows you deeply and delights in true, spiritual fellowship with His people (Romans 8:15).
