The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.

There’s great comfort in these ancient words: “The name of the Lord is a strong tower” (Proverbs 18:10). The imagery is vivid—a strong tower in the middle of a besieged land, walls thick as a fortress, rising above all confusion and danger. Just as the mighty strongholds of old shielded their inhabitants from invading armies, so God’s very character and presence become a haven, unbreakable and unwavering, for those who trust Him.

When the Bible speaks of “the name of the Lord,” it’s not just a title. It points to everything about God—His goodness, His power, His faithfulness, and His justice (Exodus 34:6). God’s mercy becomes our shield, His truth our boundary, His unchanging nature our solid foundation (Psalm 125:1). For the believer, these are not abstract ideas; they are living realities, most fully revealed in Christ— Immanuel, “God with us” (Matthew 1:23); the Righteous One who saves His people, strong and able to rescue us from every enemy (Isaiah 9:6).

Some imagine only those who seem “good enough” can run to this refuge. But Scripture assures us, it’s not self-made righteousness that brings a person to Christ’s safety (Romans 3:22). It’s an honest admission of need, a faith that moves with trust and urgency toward the Savior, knowing only He can rescue from sin, fear, and every power of darkness (Matthew 11:28). To “run” to Him is to recognize our weakness and trust His strength, again and again, every day.

So when fear or trouble draws near, remember: in Christ, you’re sheltered. His embrace is higher than your anxiety, stronger than any assault, and He holds you beyond the reach of anything that would destroy (John 10:28). Rest there, secure in the fortress of God’s unshakeable love.
