John 17:3

John 17:3

Now this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent.

When Jesus speaks about “eternal life,” He isn’t referring only to a distant promise that begins after we die. Eternal life, He says, is found first and foremost in knowing God—the only true God—and Jesus Christ, the One He has sent (John 17:3). This kind of knowledge is not simply being aware that God exists, as if we only needed to recognize Him as the Creator or hear stories about His power. Even those without Christ, or those who merely know laws and rules, can claim belief but still lack the life Jesus brings (James 2:19).

Jesus makes clear that life comes from true, personal relationship—a growing, living connection with the God of grace, forgiveness, and mercy, shown perfectly in Christ as the Mediator. This is not the sort of knowledge we gain by cold study or tradition. It’s the difference between reading a biography and having coffee with a dear friend. To know God through Christ is to trust Him, to rest in His forgiveness, and to walk with Him through each day (Philippians 3:8–9Jeremiah 9:24).

Some argue that Jesus, in speaking about the “only true God,” denies His own divinity. But here, Christ is not separating Himself from God, but instead revealing His unique role as the One sent for our salvation (John 10:301 John 5:20). The fullness of God’s life flows through both Father and Son, and eternal life depends equally on knowing Jesus as it does on knowing the Father.

So let this truth encourage you: knowing God through Christ, imperfect as we are, is already a taste of eternity. As you trust in His love and rely on His grace, you are living the very life He promises, one step closer to the fullness that waits ahead.
