John 14:26
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.
In the upper room, Jesus gently reassures His disciples about a gift soon to come: the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in Jesus’ name (John 14:26). This word “Comforter” carries a rich meaning. It’s like having an advocate in court—a friend who stands beside you, speaks up for you, and pleads your case in front of those in authority (1 John 2:1). The Spirit does this not only for the apostles brought before rulers but for every believer, quietly working on our behalf in prayer and in the struggles of our hearts (Romans 8:26–27).
But the Spirit is also called our Comforter for good reason. In times of confusion, weakness, or sorrow, He doesn’t just defend us—He encourages us, comes alongside, and brings the assurance that we are not left alone. This is the Spirit that comes from both the Father and the Son, sent not because He is less than they are, but in perfect unity with their purpose and love (John 15:26).
Jesus promises that the Spirit will teach His followers all things, making plain what Jesus has said, and reminding them—again and again—of what truly matters (1 Corinthians 2:12–13). The Spirit’s gentle ministry is the reason the gospel writers could recall and record Jesus’ words with such clarity years later. For us today, He still brings understanding, clarity, and helps us remember the hope found in Christ’s teaching.
So, rest in the comfort of knowing that you are taught, kept, and encouraged by the very Spirit of God. When you feel weak or forgetful, remember—He is the One who brings truth to life, gently guiding and reminding you of all that Jesus has promised.
