Philippians 3:20

Philippians 3:20

But our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,

Picture a traveler far from home, moving through crowded cities and unfamiliar lands, but always keeping a little reminder of where he truly belongs. This is the glory and challenge of Christian life: our real citizenship isn’t found in the places we walk every day, but in heaven—God’s own dwelling and the eternal city He has prepared for us (Philippians 3:20). Here, we’re only passing through—pilgrims who still feel the tug of home, even if our feet are planted in temporary soil (Hebrews 11:10Hebrews 11:16Leviticus 25:23).

Because of this heavenly connection, our hearts and thoughts stretch beyond what’s right in front of us. We don’t anchor our hopes in things that fade, but set our affections on the city built by God Himself, where Christ is waiting (Colossians 3:2Matthew 6:21). Our greatest longing is to finally enter our Father’s house, to be at home with the Savior who has made us citizens by His grace—not by our own doing, but because of what He has done for us.

And so, our everyday work and hopes are shaped by this future reality. We look eagerly to heaven, because that is where Jesus is—risen, reigning, interceding for us even now (Acts 2:33Hebrews 7:25). As we wait for Him to return, we can rest in the promise that He comes not only as judge but as Savior—one who has already rescued our souls and will one day heal every last effect of sin, even raising our mortal bodies to share in His victory (Acts 1:11).

So as you move through this world, hold fast to your true identity. Set your heart above, take comfort that you belong to Christ, and let this promise steady your soul. Your home—your city—is with Him, and one day you’ll see it with your own eyes.
