Philippians 1:21
For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
Paul’s words—“For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain”—open a window into the heart of the Christian life (Philippians 1:21). Here, he’s not just sharing an opinion, but painting a picture of what happens when Christ himself becomes the root, the reason, and the reward of a person’s existence. For Paul, Jesus wasn’t just someone he believed in; Jesus was both the giver and sustainer of his spiritual life, the daily food that fed his soul, and the deep desire that shaped every choice (Galatians 2:20).

Notice how Paul sees Jesus as the very source of his life—he knows that every good thing within him began with Christ and is kept alive because of Christ (Colossians 3:4). Paul’s attention, his purpose, and his energy are wrapped up in making much of Jesus: sharing the gospel, building up believers, desiring Jesus’ name to be honored in every situation (1 Corinthians 10:31). When Paul says he lives by faith in Christ and feeds on him as bread, he’s inviting us to see Jesus not as an accessory to life, but as the very centerpiece.
When Paul speaks of death as “gain,” he invites us to see it not as loss, but as release—for the believer, death means freedom from every kind of struggle: sickness, disappointment, temptation, and even sin itself (2 Corinthians 5:8). More than that, it’s the doorway into the full presence of Jesus, perfect wholeness, and the joy of seeing God face-to-face (Psalm 16:11). All the promises we cling to now become sight.
As you walk through joys and sorrows, remember: If you belong to Christ, your life—whatever the circumstance—abounds in his purpose, and even your death when it comes will be a doorway to greater gain. In Christ, nothing is wasted; his glory is displayed in your life and your homecoming.
