Romans 10:17
Consequently, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
Picture yourself sitting in a quiet room, the hum of life carrying in from distant windows. As you settle in and listen, something remarkable happens—faith begins where hearing finds its home. The passage tells us faith doesn’t spring from nowhere, nor is it conjured up by sheer willpower. Rather, faith arrives through hearing—more precisely, through the message declared and explained by those sent to speak God’s truth (Romans 10:17).

This “hearing” isn’t about the simple act of listening to words; it’s about the good news of Jesus Christ reaching our hearts when spoken with conviction and clarity. The source of this message is God’s own Word, whether describing the written Scriptures, which point unfailingly to Christ (Acts 17:2-3), or the living voice of the preacher carrying out God’s command. These preachers are God’s chosen messengers, sent on purpose—commissioned and equipped to share the truth so that others would believe (Matthew 28:19-20).
It’s tempting to think the process remains detached: that all this talking is just religious routine. But this chain has a kind of holy logic—God sends, preachers proclaim, people hear, and in that hearing, God stirs faith. It’s no accident or afterthought that the message reaches all peoples, not just one nation or group (Acts 13:47). God’s desire was always to see the message proclaimed wide and far, so that everyone—Jew and Gentile alike—might hear, believe, call out to Him, and be saved.
Let this reassure you: hearing the Word is never wasted, nor is it powerless. If you’re listening for God’s voice, or inviting others to listen, take heart—He uses these quiet, simple moments to work faith and life where once there was only question or emptiness.
