Genesis 1:26
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.”
When we read, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness,” we’re invited to listen in on a conversation that runs deeper than human wisdom could ever imagine (Genesis 1:26). Some have speculated these words were spoken to the earth itself, or perhaps to the angels, but that isn’t the intention here. God is not seeking help from creation or from heavenly beings who played no part in shaping the world. Instead, in these words, He reveals something profound about Himself—a unity of divine Persons working together, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (John 1:1-3; Colossians 1:16).

This plural “let us” points us toward the beautiful truth that our God, though One, moves and works in perfect fellowship. Man is the crowning part of creation, introduced only after everything else was prepared—the world furnished as a home, full of provision. And God did not make humanity as an afterthought or in the image of anything He had already created, but set men and women apart by giving them a stamp of His own likeness (Genesis 1:27). The dignity and value of every person is rooted here—not in what we can do, but in who fashioned us.
What does this mean for how we see ourselves and one another? It means every human life reflects something sacred. It also means God entrusted people with a task: to steward and care for His creation, to rule over the fish, birds, cattle, and every living thing that moves on the earth (Genesis 1:28). Though the text mentions dominion, the earliest gift of food was from the plants, hinting at God’s attentiveness to our needs and His authority over how life unfolds.
Be encouraged: you carry the mark of your Maker. You are not random or forgotten; you are shaped by God for a purpose, made to reflect His character and care for the world He created (Psalm 8:4-8). Even in a world that feels fractured, this original design holds fast—an anchor for your worth and a steady reminder of God’s wisdom and delight.
