Matthew 6:31-33

Matthew 6:31-33

Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles strive after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.

Picture Jesus gathering His listeners under a bright Galilean sky, quietly yet firmly urging them not to fixate on tomorrow’s worries—“What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?” (Matthew 6:31, Matthew 6:31). Of course, caring for our daily needs is reasonable, but Jesus draws a line between wise provision and anxious obsession over the future. There’s a world of difference between attention and anxiety; the first is responsible, the second robs us of peace.

He goes on to remind His followers that anxious striving marks the lives of those who do not know God—the Gentiles, or the nations, who chase after these things as if today’s provision is all life can offer (Matthew 6:32, Matthew 6:32). Their restless hunger is understandable, since so many see nothing past this life. But for God’s children—those who know their Father in heaven—such relentless anxiety is not only unnecessary, it misunderstands the generous heart of God. He sees you fully, knows your needs, and already cares about your daily bread and every season’s clothing (Matthew 6:32, Matthew 6:32).

Jesus offers a bright alternative: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness” (Matthew 6:33, Matthew 6:33). Let the first hunger of your heart be for God’s reign and the goodness that springs from trusting in Christ alone. All the rest—food, drink, clothing—will be given as God sees fit, in His kindness. Seeking the kingdom, we aim for greater joys than anything mere possessions can supply; we trust in a righteousness that is Christ’s, not our own efforts, as our true foundation.

So as you step into today, you can breathe easy, knowing that your heavenly Father sees, knows, and loves you. He’s perfectly able to supply every need. Rest in that simple, profound truth. Put His kingdom first, and trust that all else will fall into place.
