Ephesians 6:1-3

Ephesians 6:1-3

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (which is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life on the earth.”

In these words, we find a gentle, timely reminder given not only to sons and daughters, but to anyone who finds themselves in a “child” role—regardless of age or background (Ephesians 6:1). This command is wide as a family tree: it gathers not just natural-born children, but adopted, stepchildren, and anyone cared for by those who act as parents. The call extends to every kind of parent as well: mothers, fathers, grandparents, guardians, and those who fill that role in our lives. God asks for this obedience in the things that are good, lawful, and right according to His Word—not in things that would lead to sin (Colossians 3:20). We are to obey sincerely, not just outwardly, and with hearts filled with gratitude for those who have cared for and provided for us (Proverbs 23:22). This obedience is rooted “in the Lord,” either as a guide—it’s limited to what pleases Christ—or as a reason—we do it as faithful followers of Jesus (Ephesians 6:1).

Honoring parents goes beyond simple obedience. It means holding them in high regard, speaking to and about them respectfully, showing patience with their weaknesses, and caring for them when they are in need (Matthew 15:41 Timothy 5:4). Our actions, words, and even our gestures are all ways to reflect this honor. God values this so highly that He linked a promise to it—the first commandment to do so: “that it may go well with you and you may enjoy long life on the earth” (Ephesians 6:2–3Exodus 20:12Deuteronomy 5:16). While long days are ultimately in God’s hands, He teaches us that respecting our elders brings blessing in this world, and in the life to come.

If your family ties feel complicated or imperfect, take heart—God knows every story. Your faithfulness in showing respect and kindness, even in challenging circumstances, is seen and cherished by Him. As you seek to honor those who raised you, remember it is ultimately a gift of worship to God Himself, whose loving care for us undergirds every family.
