1 Corinthians 6:20
you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.
Picture a slave market in the ancient world. Whoever paid the ransom price for a captive gained not just their freedom, but their loyalty and devotion. Paul draws on this vivid image to tell believers, “You were bought at a price” (1 Corinthians 6:20). Our freedom from the grip of sin, from the claims of the law, from all darkness, did not come cheaply. It was purchased, not with silver or gold, but with the priceless blood of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:18-19). In God’s ancient people, it was common for a groom to secure his bride with the smallest coin; Christ, far surpassing all custom, secured His people by offering His own life.
This isn’t just redemption; it’s a wedding vow. Christ called the church His bride long before we believed (Ephesians 5:25-27). Even when humanity stumbled into bondage—caught in sin, held captive to brokenness—He moved to pay our ransom and seal what He had pledged in eternity. This act puts us under the deepest obligation: our bodies and spirits are no longer our own. Out of gratitude, we’re called to live with fidelity and devotion as His dearly loved bride.
So, then, honor God—both with your body and your spirit (Romans 12:1). Practically, this means more than just words or intentions. We glorify Christ when we speak well of Him, when our daily lives reflect His character, and when our sacrifices, great or small, are offered out of love. To glorify Him “with your body” is to mark your outward life with His grace—offering your work, your relationships, even your endurance in suffering for His sake. To glorify Him “with your spirit” is to yield your heart to Him, setting His honor as your secret joy and motivation.
You belong to Christ—by creation, by promise, by purchase. Let that truth steady and gladden your heart: you are cherished, you are claimed, and your whole life is precious in His sight.
