Ephesians 4:32

Ephesians 4:32

Be kind and tenderhearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you.

There’s a beautiful simplicity in Paul’s words: “Be kind to each other” (Ephesians 4:32). This isn’t just about being polite or offering a quick smile in passing. True Christian kindness runs much deeper—it softens our faces, colors our words with warmth, and shapes our actions into daily expressions of grace. It’s the sort of goodness that naturally looks for ways to help, encourage, and lift up those around us, even in small, unnoticed ways.

Tenderheartedness, Paul says, must take the place of cold indifference. Instead of turning away when someone is struggling, we’re called to draw near—to feel their burdens as our own, and to let mercy win out over judgment. Hard-heartedness only breeds more distance and bitterness, but tender hearts reflect the compassion of Christ himself (Colossians 3:12). Whether responding to those who have wronged us, those in need, or those who have stumbled, the Spirit gently nudges us toward patience and gentleness, not harshness or a critical spirit.

Paul draws us even further in with a high calling: “forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32). We don’t forgive because others have earned it, or only when they apologize. We forgive because God’s forgiveness to us through Christ overflows—unceasing, full, and freely given, washing away all our debts (Matthew 18:21-22). And just as His mercy is deep and unreserved, so ours must echo that grace, letting go of the record of wrongs, refusing to keep score, choosing to heal rather than to wound.

Let this steady and encourage you as you walk with others. The kindness and grace we share don’t drain us dry; they draw from Christ’s endless supply. Whatever is needed—whether a forgiving spirit, a gentle word, or practical support for a friend in need—God has already given you so much, and it’s from that abundance that we’re able to give freely to others (Philippians 4:19). Take heart, then: every act of kindness and forgiveness becomes a living reminder that you are dearly loved and deeply changed by Jesus.
