Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Imagine yourself walking along a quiet path at night—uncertain steps ahead, hidden roots and stones threatening to trip you. In this dark world, God’s Word is like a handcrafted lamp, warm and reliable, showing you where to safely place your feet and illuminating the road ahead (Psalm 119:105). Without its light, we grope in uncertainty, but with it, each next step is clear.

God’s instructions—His laws and commands—act as that steady light. They uncover the difference between right and wrong, exposing our failures and flaws, and revealing that we need a righteousness better than anything we could provide ourselves (Romans 3:20). This light not only reveals dangers on the journey, but also shows the beauty of God’s grace and mercy, offering a new way to live through Jesus Christ (2 Timothy 3:15). The truth at the heart of Scripture is that, through the Gospel, we see God more clearly, and are taught how to live in a way that is upright, gentle, and pleasing to Him (Titus 2:11-12).

Just as a torch is only useful to those whose eyes can see, God’s Word truly guides those whose hearts He has opened. The Spirit helps us understand and treasure what we read, so that the light of Scripture doesn’t just shine around us, but also within us, helping us avoid hidden dangers and travel steadily to our true home (1 Corinthians 2:12). If you’re feeling lost or unsure today, take heart: God’s Word will not leave you stumbling in the dark. Let it be the lamp in your hand and the light on your path, one step at a time.
