2 Corinthians 4:18

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

It’s easy to become absorbed with the things we can see and touch—wealth, status, comfort, or fleeting thrills that often dazzle the senses and capture our attention (2 Corinthians 4:18). These visible things tend to shout the loudest, promising satisfaction but quickly fading away like a mist in the morning sun. When we let our hearts long for these temporary treasures, making them our chief pursuit, trouble and hardship feel even heavier, offering little hope for something better on the other side.

But the perspective shifts for those who belong to Christ. When we loosen our hold on earthly pursuits, even learning to see them with wise disregard, suffering starts to take on a different meaning. And if our troubles themselves are the “seen things,” we’re reminded not to fix our attention on them either. Focusing all our energy and vision on trials only stirs up frustration, doubt, and bitterness (Hebrews 12:2). Instead, as we lift our eyes to the unseen—to Christ, who has already endured suffering for us, and to the lasting joy waiting beyond the present shadow—our burdens are tempered by hope and a deepening faith.

The unseen things—heaven’s joys, God’s faithful promises, the glory that never fades—cannot be grasped by ordinary eyesight or human reasoning. Only the “eye of faith” can truly linger here, trusting in what God has promised, even when everything outward seems bleak (Hebrews 11:1). These are the things that last forever, untouched by time or loss. Let this lift your heart today: every hardship lived with your eyes on heaven is working for a weightier, lasting good than anything this passing world could ever give or take away (Romans 8:18). Keep looking up, letting patience and faith root you deeply in what will never fade.
