Numbers 23:19
God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?
Standing at the threshold of God’s promises, we are gently reminded that He is unlike any human being. Humanity, limited by flesh, prone to weakness, and often wavering, is marked by shifting moods and broken assurances. But God does not belong to this order—He is not bound by the limitations or unreliability of mankind (Numbers 23:19). When Scripture occasionally uses human language to describe Him, it is only to help us understand, not to reduce Him to our level.
Where people so often fall short, God never does. He cannot lie or change like we do, for He is utterly faithful and eternally true (Titus 1:2). Every promise that rests on His word is as firm as the day it was spoken, for what He intends, He accomplishes (Isaiah 46:10). No twist of circumstance or human failure can frustrate God’s purposes—His faithfulness is not subject to surprise, weakness, or regret.
When God makes a promise, He stands by it unwaveringly. For Israel, that meant His pledged blessing and the inheritance of Canaan could not be revoked or overturned by any outside pressure (Psalm 89:34). For us, it means every word in Scripture—every pledge of grace, forgiveness, and eternal life in Christ—remains utterly dependable, immune to the shifting sands of time or human failure (2 Corinthians 1:20).
Take comfort, then, that the God who calls you has no shadow of turning (James 1:17). His choices are steadfast, His covenant sure, and His love for His people unwavering. Lay hold of His promises with confidence, knowing He is both able and willing to bring them to pass, according to His perfect wisdom and grace.
