The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

When we read that Christ is “the image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1:15), we’re told something wondrous and mysterious. This doesn’t mean Jesus is a reflection of divinity only, or simply a likeness—He is the perfect, eternal, and complete image of the Father Himself. The fullness of God’s nature dwells in Christ (Colossians 1:19), and though God the Father was never seen in bodily form by people, in Jesus we see that which was hidden: the glory, wisdom, and character of God made visible to us (John 1:18). We catch glimpses of God’s greatness in the world around us, but in Christ, we behold the heart and likeness of the invisible God, brought near.

When Scripture calls Him “the firstborn over all creation” (Colossians 1:15), it does not mean that Jesus Himself was created. Instead, He is the eternal Son, begotten—not made—before anything else existed (John 1:1-3), and He stands as ruler and heir over all things (Hebrews 1:2). Just as the “firstborn” in ancient times was the one who inherited authority and blessing, so Christ is declared King and Lord over all creation. Every created thing owes its being to Him (Colossians 1:16), and He upholds the universe by His mighty word.

In Jesus, all the riches of God’s love, grace, and faithfulness are displayed for us to see. We aren’t left to guessing games or shadows—through Christ, God’s compassion and holiness are made real and tangible. If you ever wonder what God is like, look to Jesus; in Him, the invisible becomes personal and present for every believer, and through Him, we are welcomed to know the Father’s heart forever (John 14:9).
