2 Corinthians 4:5
For we do not proclaim ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.
Picture a group of friends around a table—not gathered to boast, but to share something precious they’ve found. This is the heart behind these words: “We do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake” (2 Corinthians 4:5). The apostles are eager for everyone to understand that their message isn’t about their own ideas, talents, or achievements. They aren’t looking to build their own reputation or gather personal followers, nor are they setting themselves up as experts who should be trusted because of their own wisdom or charm. Instead, they place Christ front and center in all they say and do.

The true message they share isn’t stitched together from their own cleverness or ambition. They don’t teach that we’re strong enough to impress God on our own, or that salvation can be earned by hard work or good deeds (Titus 3:5). No, all their words and work exist to point to Jesus: fully God and fully man, the one Mediator between God and people—our Saviour and Redeemer (1 Timothy 2:5). Their message is about the living Christ who welcomes sinners, gives peace, and mends the rift between God and a broken world (2 Corinthians 5:18; Romans 5:1). They announce that all hope, forgiveness, and true life come only through Jesus.
What does this mean for us? Simply this: we’re called to serve, not rule; to lift Jesus high, not ourselves. The apostles counted it an honor to serve others by bringing them the good news, strengthening and encouraging them, not out of pride, but out of love for Jesus and for those He loves (Mark 10:45; Galatians 5:13).
So take heart. In God’s family, you don’t have to promote yourself or strive for recognition. The greatest work is quietly serving for Christ’s sake, shining the spotlight on Him—because every grace and blessing we need flows from His hand, not ours.
