Psalm 34:17
The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears; He delivers them from all their troubles.
When we read, “the righteous cry, and the Lord hears,” we’re invited to picture something deeply personal: God’s ear turned kindly toward the desperate prayers of His people (Psalm 34:17). Even though the word “righteous” isn’t in the original sentence, it rightfully belongs here—as many ancient translators and commentators have recognized—because God’s attention is especially promised to those who trust and follow Him (Psalm 34:15).
This passage isn’t connected to words of warning for wrongdoers, but instead it expands upon the gentle promise that God’s ears are open to the cries of the faithful. Though some have suggested it might apply to those turning from evil, the main message here is that God stands ready to respond to His children whenever they call out in need.
The troubles mentioned here aren’t just the heartaches and losses we encounter in daily life, but also the deep, inward struggles—the quiet wrestling with doubts, spiritual confusion, and the harmful whispers of the enemy (Romans 7:22-25). Whether it’s suffering, opposition, or the ache of feeling distant from God, He is neither indifferent nor unresponsive. Sooner or later, the Lord delivers all who cry out to Him—sometimes by removing the trial, sometimes by strengthening His people to endure and overcome (Psalm 34:19).
So, if you find yourself weighed down today—whether it’s internal fears, external troubles, or a sense of distance from the Lord—remember that His care runs deeper than any problem you face. He hears you at your lowest, and His deliverance is sure, wise, and full of love.
